When to Wear Safety Shoes
Safety shoes can protect your feet from crush injuries, extremes in temperatures and from some chemicals. Not only are safety shoes recommended in some workplaces, they are mandatory in some. To find out when you should wear safety shoes read a few suggestions for more information.
When Working in Factories
You should always wear steel-toed safety shoes when working in a factory or when working with heavy equipment. In the event that a heavy piece of material falls on your foot, you are less likely to sustain a crush injury when you wear safety shoes. Although safety shoes don't make the best fashion statement, they may save your foot from being crushed.
While Working in a Laboratory
Safety shoes should be worn when working in a laboratory. If you accidentally spill a chemical on your feet, they will be protected by the safety shoes. Most safety shoes are waterproof, so the spilled chemical will simply slip off your shoes. In addition, some safety shoes may even be treated with an antibacterial or antiviral substance so in the event a biohazard substance falls on your feet, you're less likely to be affected by it.
Working on a Dock
If you work on a loading dock, loading and unloading trucks, you will need to wear safety shoes. Dock workers are at risk for dropping parcels, and some can be very heavy. If you don't wear your safety shoes, you are risking a severe injury or even an amputation. Some trucking companies will not even allow their staff to work until they are wearing their safety shoes.
