Where to Buy an Antique Auto

Almost everyone seems to love the look of lovingly restored antique automobiles.  Hundreds of people will line up for antique automobile parades. Heads turn when a shiny antique car rolls down the street. They universally evoke smiles and nostalgic thoughts. Many people have wondered what it would be like to own an antique automobile and where they might easily find one that they can restore.

Even if you are not skilled enough to restore such an automobile, you can usually find the car you want, already restored.  While antique automobiles are specialized items, there are a number of places where you can find them.

  • Start with online antique automobile sites. You can go online and search keyword phrases such as “buying antique autos” or “buying classic cars.”  This will bring up dozens of websites, which can then be narrowed down to those in your area.

  • Call local junkyards and online junkyard sites.

  • Find local antique automobile clubs or attend meets. Ask around and learn as much as you can.

  • Attend antique automobile auctions.  Just watch the first few times.

  • Use the information you acquire to educate yourself about what is available and what specific cars should cost in a certain condition.

  • Once you are ready to buy, follow the basic steps you would follow when purchasing a used car, with a few additions.

  • Be wary of automobiles that are heavily rusted. Too much rust damage may make your car impossible to restore.

  • Check our every car in person, even if you are purchasing a car that is not running. If you are not knowledgeable, bring along someone who is.

  • Realistically calculate the cost of restoration.  This is most important if you are planning to resell the car.

  • Realistically estimate the value of the vehicle as restored and what it will cost to insure.

  • Make sure you know where you will be able to get parts for restoration and maintenance after restoration.

Regardless of whether you buy a fully restored vehicle or lovingly restore it yourself, drive it with the pride of knowing that you have given new life to an old classic.
