Where to Take a Pilates Class
Pilates, once called contrology, is a form of physical exercise that is based on six principles: concentration, control, center, flow, precision and breathing. It focuses on increasing flexibility, strength, endurance and coordination. Because of its complexity, it is often helpful to take a Pilates class. Even though there are over 14,000 instructors in the United States, you may need some help deciding where to take a Pilates class.
- Check at your local gyms for Pilates class offerings. Pilates is a very popular form of exercise so many gyms offer several classes a day. Additionally, you may receive the benefit of being taught by a certified instructor if you choose to enroll in a class at a reputable gym.
- Ask some dance studios nearby if they offer Pilates classes. Dance studios often offer this art in addition to ballet, yoga, creative movement, nia and stretching. If you don’t think you would be comfortable in a class with a bunch of gym people, try taking the class at a dance studio instead.
- Go to a college or university for a class. Many schools have recreation programs that they offer classes through that are open to both students and the general public. Classes may also be cheaper than those offered through a gym.
- See if your community center offers exercise classes. Many community recreation centers hold classes for free that are open to all community members. If you have to miss a few, then you won’t feel guilty for wasting your money if you choose to take classes through the city.
- Get some friends together that are interested in learning Pilates and have an instructor come to one of your houses. This will enable you to feel comfortable with all of your classmates and put you in a familiar setting.
