Why Sealing Tile Grout is Important

Sealing tile grout is an important though at times over looked part of the tiling process. This may be due to the fact that grout must cure before it can be sealed, it is easy to forget to go back and finish after waiting anywhere from a few days to a month for the drying time. However, finishing the job and sealing your tile grout can make a big difference in how long it lasts.

  • Stays looking fresh. Dirt gets embedded in unsealed grout and it is almost impossible to get it looking clean again.

  • Keeps water from penetrating the grout. Water can lead to mold and mildew not only on the grout but under the tiles as well. sealing keeps the water on the surface where it can be wiped up instead of allowing it into places where mold can grow.

  • Helps the grout to last longer. It does not break and flake as quickly when it is sealed. Not only does it last longer, but it looks better too. This will enable you to wait longer before feeling the need to replace it.

  • Looks better. Unsealed grout often gets discolored over time. Sealing will keep it looking the original color that you used.

  • It makes the cleaning job a lot easier. Dirt gets absorbed into the grout, making it very difficult to clean. With sealer the dirt stays up over the grout enabling you to clean without a lot of scrubbing.

  • Aids in prevention. Grout is a porous material that can harbor bacteria. Placing a seal over it prevents this from happening.

  • Helps to prevent the odor of mildew.
