Foundation Vs. Acne: Is Foundation Bad For Acne?

Jun 23, 2020

The foundation story is here to stay. How does it relate to acne? Well, I know it is wrong to start picking and prodding at our spot, but does it mean that we have to stay away from foundation for good?

The answer is simple; No!

Of course, if you are not cleansing well or removing your makeup at night, that’s a whole different story. However, foundation itself will not clog your pores or cause the spots to rear their ugly heads.

With that said, you need to exercise some caution when choosing the foundation to wear. The ingredients and the texture of your foundation bottle will play a crucial role when it comes to makeup – it is the difference between smooth skin and a face that is covered with whiteheads, blackheads, and some serious angry spots.

You have to invest in a great foundation that will bring out the beauty that you really are.

Things to Avoid

Apart from investing in a quality foundation, there are certain things you need to avoid. Here are some of them.

Stick or Pancake Foundation

With acne, I know how the temptation it can be to use solid or heavy foundations to make those spots less visible. However, your skin needsto heal and breathe while covering the red patches and bumps.

It is better to understand that long-wear and thick foundation is likely to be pore-clogging. Usually, sticks foundation will fare no better since they use acrylics as a binding agent. This is one of the compounds you need to avoid – they will aggravate a blemish-prone and oily skin.

Shimmery Formulas

They come in the high-sheen finish due to Bismuth Oxychloride, a pigment that normally comes in a pearlescent finish, and it is often found in eye shadows, blush, and bronzers. In different situations, they can worsen your acne situation.

If you have to achieve the shimmery makeup finish, ensure that you have washed your skin twice a day, thoroughly – in the morning and evening. Washing will clear Bismuth Oxychloride residue from the pores.

Fragrances and Alcohol

Alcohol is used in different foundations as a carrier that helps other ingredients sink in the skin. It can also be used for its astringent properties that are ideal for the treatment of oil types. The drawback of alcohol is it is highly irritating and drying something that will cause the oil glands to go unto an overdrive and, in turn, produce some spots.

Some of the alcohols you need to avoid include:

·        Ethyl alcohol

·        SD alcohol

·        Denatured alcohol

·        Ethanol

·        Benzyl alcohol

·        Isopropyl alcohol

·        Methanol

When these alcohols are found as an ingredient for a given foundation, they are probably going to become a problem for any acne-prone skin. No matter how good-smelling a foundation is, the irritation and sensitivity are not worth it.

Go for foundations with mattifying textures and acne-preventing ingredients.
