Most of us have made it through the winter with ice and snow forming on our roofs and in our rain gutters. Ice dams o our roofs and frozen dripping roof edges causing slick dangerous sidewalks and steps! How can these hazards be avoided? Unfortunately, there is no easy answer, first you must take a look a the roof and consider the problems you have encounterd. Ice dams could occur with improper venting of the attic, improper insulation and are more prone to occur on north facing roofs. Dripping rain gutters may have been frozen, clogged with leaves or improperly installed. Often a raingutter has water drip behind it due to improper roofing or flashing.
