Singers: Find your sense of place in your song

Sep 21, 2010
People throughout history have created songs, stories, and poems about their relationship to the places they inhabit.  It has helped define their sense of self and culture within the community.  In our busy internet based lives, we can often feel a sense of disconnection, so writing about places we know and love can help us regain that connection for ourselves and others.  People love to hear songs about places they have visited or descriptions about landmarks they remember from their travels.  Even songs that are merely situational settings such as the type of room the song is set, is important for the singer to recreate.
Singers oftentimes are so caught up on the "sound" of their voice to monitor it as they sing, that they do not truly focus on the message of the song itself.  Vocal exercises are best suited to train the voice for things such as tuning, breathing and tonal quality.  Once you enter into the song domain though, the lyric is king and must receive the proper focus to improve the effectiveness and "delivery" of the song's message.  Singers need to remember, they are the only instrument on earth that is not "man-made" and the only musical instrument that requires text to be mixed with pitch and rhythm.  This is the singer's true calling....to communicate those words to their audience.....simply, honestly and effectively.
