Porter Hospital and the medication erorrs part 2a
Jan 10, 2014
Important Notes regarding my husband’s recovery on the 4th floor:
11/6: I arrived in his room at the same time he did. I handed the nurse leaving from the shift the meds. I went over his medications I brought from home for him to use in their original containers and what they were prescribed for with the nurse entering them, andI mentioned that I did not have his Trilipix prescription, however, that he was unsure where he had left it at home. The nurse asked what it was prescribed for, and I told her it was prescribed for hyperlipidemia. My husband then responded that his cholesterol has been very good since taking it. (My 32 year-old son, who is a physics teacher, was in the room during this period of time as well.) 11/7: i. He had severe pain which caused him to cry (he does not cry….ever!) after isometric exercises with Heidi (OT). Ed, the nurse, reluctantly gave him IV Dilaudid to reduce the pain. ii. He was very out of it for a few hours, went with Ward (PT) after became more alert, had another bad episode of severe spasm in Left upper back and had to have another dose of IV Dilaudid for pain. iii. Dr. Fedorowicz saw my husband and said that he would prescribe a “concoction” that has worked in the past. Not once did he relate what this was (I had to ask the nurse). He did not go over the pros and cons of taking this medication or potential interactions with his current medications violated Patient Bill of Rights for informed consent. iv. His “concoction” included Klonipin and Tylenol. Klonipin and the Trileptal are not a good combination and increased his lethargy and general “dopiness”.
