Typically not. If you have Physical Damage coverage (Collision, Comprehensive) and have a covered loss occur that requires the vehicle to also be towed, you would be "covered" for that tow.

However, even with Physical damage coverages on your policy a tow would not typically be "covered" if a loss occurred that was not a covered loss. For example a mechanicla breakdown, requiring a tow, is not a covered loss under the typical policy.

To have a tow "covered" due to a mechanical breakdown (dead battery, flat tire, bad alternator, etc.) you would need to add Emergency Road Service (aka Towing coverage) to the policy for a nominal fee.

In New York you would need towing coverage added to your auto insurance and it is usually only available for vehicles that have collision coverage added already. It costs very little and may be part of a roadside assistance package if your company offers that.

  3. 10-EIGHT Towing & Transport
Collision coverage typically will cover the expenses associated with recovery, towing, and storage of a vehicle involved in a collision. These charges are included with the repair bills, as transport to the facility is necessary to obtain repairs. When an individual has collision coverage, the repair facility will pay for the tow and get reimbursed from the insurance company when repairs are completed.

If you do not have collision coverage, emergency roadside service coverage will also cover towing if you contact them from the scene of the accident or disablement location. Many insurance companies contract with certain towing providers and will usually only cover the costs if an approved provider is used, Other companies will reimburse you up to a certain dollar amount, regardless of who provides the service. Check the policy you are signing up for to determine if it covers a certain dollar limit or certain number of miles, plus determine what charges you will incur if you exceed the limit. For example, some policies allow for 5 miles and then require you to pay $5 per mile. This can get expensive quickly and you may be better off working out a cash deal with the towing company when they're needed.

Since inexperienced tow operators can cause both mechanical and cosmetic damages to one's vehicle, I recommend doing your research in advance. Use a knowldgeable company that utiizes certified professionals. Even if your insurance company uses preferred providers, you may be able to request this company by name and insist on this company due to thier qualifications.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.
