I'd say a great first step is to get some experience working for vendors. Staff catering jobs, help florists or DJs,etc... it's invaluable to have a working knowledge of all aspects of events and nothing beats working 'in the pits'.

My daughter and I have planned 3 weddings which included the church and reception. She is a Floral designer so had alot of expierence but we wanted to do it part-time so she could be home with her children. Unfortunately we moved so we're now several states apart so it's not do-able.
We were going to visit different Reception Venues, professional printers and floral shops. Floral shops usually outsource the event other than the flowers. It would be an advantage if a bride could just go to a florist and get her whole event planned...so Floral Shops would benefit from having a planner on their list of resources. They could even have more than one, since everyone has a different style.
Prof. Printing places may be intrested in your talents to offer brides that order invites...again, it would be to their benefit to offer your services also.
Also, try the different venues, like ballroom facilities or banquet facilities. It would be an advantage for the businesses to offer your services on their resource list and in turn, you could utilize their services and provide them customers too.
Be sure to put tog a portfolio with pictures of what you have done or what you KNOW you can do...don't put anything in it that you're not ABSOLUTELY sure you can do, so you may want to PRACTICE some of the ideas if you didn't have them at your own wedding or you haven't done before.
I hope this helps...be sure to participate in any local events like bridal shows or ?
    Good Luck!
