The future of computers is always an uncertainty but there will always be trends. Currently almost everything we do is through an application. You wake up, have some coffee then you look at your Android or iPone and click on your Facebook app to see what your friends were up to while you were asleep. Then you click on your weather app to see what you should wear for the day and if you need an umbrella. These cell phone apps have brought the tablets back from the dead and this time without the keyboards; and why tablets, because the screens are bigger and we can jam pack these bigger devices with more memory and processing power to handle more memory intensive apps. Now, are tablets the answer, for consumers I would have to say yes. With an app to handle your every need; why should you purchase a desktop or even a laptop. With laptops and desktops you need to keep track of your programs, disk defragments, virus scans and the time consuming keyboard or you can have a tablet that the operating system is more lightweight and does not need to constant pampering for your device to run smoothly. Most of these devices have voice to text so you don't have to worry about the onscreen keyboards. Now in the business world, the adoption of a tablet depends on the field. For photographers and digital artist; tablets are great for showcasing their work on the go. For programmers, web developers, and CAD Technicians, tablets are a paper weight due mainly the lack of processing power and the keyboard. In the consumer world tablets and apps are gaining enormous ground especially with the price of tablets going down. In the business world tablets have their place but only in certain fields. Before buying a tablet you need to analysis what you do on a daily basis that could benefit from the use of a tablet with a special app. If you can't think of one then I wouldn't purchase one and continue on with the tried and true desktop/laptop.

I think tablets such as the Ipad and even some of the Android tablets are a bit immature for most business needs. For a marketing group who is demoing web applications they are a decent fit. The only unit I have tested that is close to a desktop in performance is the Asus EE-slate. We obtained the personal version but a business version is due out.

The EE Slate comes with full Windows 7 installed. It has a Core 2 Duo processor, same as a Dell workstation. It has 4 GB of ram (business is higher) and a 60+ GB Solid State hard drive. It is a touch screen, has a stylus and a bluetooth keyboard. We upgraded ours to Windows 7 Professional and installed Office 2010 without an issue.

Tablets alone are not the answer at this time. Tablets are a convenience for those on the go and want to have access to their email, social media, internet access and specific business needs. For example, a business owner who did residential window washing is using his tablet to view houses before he goes to see them via Google maps and thus be able to give them an estimate before traveling a long distance.

The Notebooks and Desktops are more convenient for inputting data because of the keyboards vs. the Tablet has the built in keyboard on the screen and thus one needs to develop their finger touch technique to press the right keys (can be time consuming)

This has been what people have been saying for the past few years, first with the flip/rotating screen laptops from Dell/Gateway (the original tablets). But I don't see them taking the place of your standard run of the mill laptop and especially not the desktop. Yes they are nice to have and have the capabilities to connect into multiple other platforms/systems if you have the right tools, but they lake the cooling, space and speed that you'll see in a laptop or a desktop. It will always come down to space, the more space you have the better you are off with cooling and allowing for faster, products to run, because like physics the faster something runs the hotter it gets, and in a compact environment things will just get hotter quicker. IMO.

The iPad 2 is here. It will certainly dominate tablet sales this year, but it is not the future of the tablet. The demand for Tablets is forecast to grow exponentially this year and the iPad 2 and its numerous competitors working in copycat mode are all hoping to cash in on this demand. Apple’s domination of this category, along with the historical failures by big-time competitors like Microsoft, has created a mad rush to create iPad clones. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 tablets coming out this year, and most of them seem to have no better sense of purpose than to replicate the iPad. This is a doomed strategy, if it can be called as strategy at all. But the iPad and the majority of its competitors are focusing on a very narrow view of what the tablet can do.

    Sincerely,

Tablets can be a either a replacement for a PC or a device used in addition to a PC. I myself will always need a PC for the more complex tasks that a tablet was never designed to do. The best way to determine if a tablet is right for you is to borrow a friend's tablet for at least an hour and see if you can comfortably use it to browse the web, read the news, check your email, play a game, read a book, listen to music, watch a video, or whatever else you would normally use your computer to do that a tablet is capable of doing. If you find you never want to sit down at your computer again, the tablet may be a good PC replacement. Otherwise, the tablet may be just a handy device to use in addition to your PC to give you a bit of freedom to move about the world while experiencing the benefits of computing that a tablet provides.

Ultimately, choosing between a laptop and an iPad should be based on your computing usage and needs. The iPad's cheaper price is a definite plus but remember cheaper also means less. For those who want bare necessities of browsing, eMails, watching movies and reading eBooks, the iPad fills this need. I’m sure the debate will continue as future iPad versions are released.

The future of computers is wide open with no one platform being the dominate platform. Are tablets the answer? Without the question being clearly defined there cannot be a clear cut answer such as tablets. Some businesses may benefit from tablets, while others may have no use for them. A blended approach to technology may be the best answer.

We agree with Psinenergy -- but the answer mostly seems to depend on what people need and want from their computers. The nice part about technology is the fact that it is continuing to advance, so there is a lot more innovation coming. At the end of the day, figure out what you think you want for the next couple of years and see what comes out next.

The future of computers is honestly anyone's guess. The back and forth swing between portability and performance has been going on for quite a while.

Take cell phones for example. As demand increased so did the desire to have them be smaller. Then performance and functionality started to take over and smart phones became the next wave with larger screens.

With the addition of the tablet to the market, there is definitely a shake up coming, but the performance still does not compete to higher powered laptops and definitely not to most desktops.

I guess in short, my answer is, we will have to wait and see. As performance and interoperability increase, so will demand for tablets. That is, until the next great innovation.
