Content is King (or Queen) in the SEO world. :-) If you are generating relevant content on a regular basis and using various means to point visitors to that content, then you will have a significant advantage over most of your competition. I completely agree with the other responders (Authentic PR and Broekman), social media is an excellent way to drive traffic to the content on your site. Also blogging and answering questions in forums like this help as well.
What is relevant content? Well, relevancy is in the eye of the beholder, and of Google. If you find people returning to your site for helpful information about your expertise, then that is a good sign. If people are reposting your facebook/linkedin/blog articles for others to see, that is a good sign. If your newsletter sign-up list is growing on it's own, that is a good sign. Relevant content is content that helps the visitor get the information they are looking for and has enough keywords to satisfy Google's ever-changing criteria.
Related to this is the number and quality of links that link to your site. The more high-quality links, the better. Link farms (sites created by SEO companies just to provide inbound links to their client's sites) = bad. CNN.com = good. You get the picture. Obviously, few will get a link from CNN.com, but if you are getting articles published in trade journals or local newspapers, make sure the online articles have links to your site.
Generally speaking, the higher the quality of your content, the more likely it is you will be able to get articles published and links to your site.
Videos are another excellent way to increase your SEO. Why not have a few short how-to videos and an company intro video by the president on the site? Make sure these videos are posted on YouTube. This helps deliver relevant content.
HOWEVER, there is more to SEO than just the content. It is also important to have a website that is search-engine friendly. This means HTML and/or PHP and NOT flash. If you have flash on your site, get rid of it. Other than the occasional logo or something, flash has no place on a modern website that wants to be discovered in a search.
Also the structure of the site, the way it is coded, the way the links are setup, etc must also be clean and sound.
- Make sure all the pages have appropriate keywords in the titles
- Make sure all images have titles with relevant keywords
- Make sure the images have alternate text with keywords in their descriptions (for those who have images turned off or who are visually impared)
- Make sure the videos have relevant keywords in their titles and descriptions.
- It is good to have internal links full URL's instead of just relevant links
- use java script when possible instead of tables to control page layouts,
etc, etc, you get the idea. The more technical side of SEO requires a good bit of time and study, and that is one of the reasons an SEO professional can be worth their weight in gold.
There are many factors in the way a site is built that can improve SEO, and there are many great publications on the matter. "Search Engine Optimization for Dummies" is a good place to start.
Hope that helps! :-)

SEO is the perfect marriage between getting the right information on YOUR website with keywords and buzz words that promote you and your business ALONG WITH submitting similar content to your social profiles including your Facebook Fanpage, LinkedIn, Twitter accounts along with any website submissions to search engines!!!
I tend to approach SEO through extensive social media outreach. I create a blog to act as a second website for my company to promote myself. I create a powerpoint and upload it to slideshare.net and watch that get optimized like a youtube video. :)
AND I act every day (I dedicate 15-30mins) to engage with social media so that I am active with my profiles!!! It's all about constant attention, new content and extending your proverbial web promoting you. :)

Hard work, patience and continuous updating and testing of your site, content and keywords.
Unique content is the main thing you should optimize before you do anything else. Without unique, optimized, interesting and relevant content you will never rank high or stay on top of your competitors.
Keyword research is a continuous task. The things people search for changes daily so it's important to make sure that you are targeting the right keywords and thus you will need to keep optimizing your keywords.
SEO can not be done overnight, you will need patience and continuously work on updating your site, staying up to par with the newest techniques and search engine rules and regulations.

Best thing to consider is your content. Make sure the content on your website is relevant to what you are advertising yourself as. Your domain name can help a great deal as well.
Using social networks is a great way to even the playing field to help with SEO because social networks are popular and high traffic sites. Focus on content and keywords and you wont go wrong. Go easy on the keywords though, too many redundant ones pass you off as a higher risk of spam than legit content.

The link was corrupt in my last post.
Sorry re-post on this answer, the last portion of my answer should have read:

TruePresence (Los Angeles) does a great job answering your question. But one of the main things they skipped in their response is the topic on conversions. (Though based off the level of detail in their response, I'm sure they focus on this with their clients. )
What is a conversion?
Recall, the end goal of what we are doing as business owners and why we would use SEO or SEM. What do you want your visitors to do? Sign-up for something? Ultimately buy or lease something? Invest? Whatever your company identifies as a valuable goal, or mile stone to a more desire goal can be considered a conversion –the visitors doing what you want them to do.
SEO is not free. It will cost you either time or money (or more aptly varying degrees of both). Regardless of how it is divided, these are costs. So spend wisely. If you get 1,000 visitors from site A, but none of your desired "conversions" are being met (such as whitepaper downloads, subscribers, contact requests, sales, getting a loan, etc.), then you are wasting you money (or time equivalent). Effective SEO encompasses looking at what your visitors are doing and constantly analyzing what is working and what isn’t. Is it the referring sites that are the problem? Perhaps the landing page(s) has/have a weak call to action. (& so on)
Bottom-line answer for the best way to increase SEO for your company. Get with a local SEO provider that has a proven track record and basis the marketing plan around your organizational goals, tracks those results, reports them to you, and works closely with you to improve your most important goals so that you get bottom-line results. Why a local SEO provider?
When you delve into social media –as I see you already have, it helps having a SEO provider to come in and meet with you/your staff on a weekly or monthly basis. Some of it is for video shoots, etc. But businesses really need a SEO company that essentially teams up with their organization. Because social media relays “who a company is” & what the company stand for, the relationship between the SEO Company and the business needs to be very close. Therefore working with a local SEO company can save you both time & money yielding more significant benefits to your bottom-line. That being said, you may want to call on TruePresence to see what they can offer since they took the time to answer your question. I’d be interested in hearing about your results either way.

Depending on your target audience and your service area (local vs. regional vs. national) you can elevate your SEO value by:
1) Focus on your efforts on Local Search Marketing
2) Hire an SEO guy who knows how to optimize a WordPress site
3) Make sure you target the right Keywords (this is critical)
4) Build a solid Web 2.0 Link Wheel 5) Build quality back links to your site (early & often)
6) Install the +1 Button on every site you own
7) Add and Optimize Video on every site you own
8) Add Quality Content to every site you own (frequently)
9) Install Google Analytics to Confirm all of the above
[ Caveats ]
If you're planning to DIY SEO, make sure you follow Matt Cutts and heed his advice. He is Google's Top SEO guy and all of us in the SEO space read his Blog and consume his YT videos.
If you hire an SEO guy to do this work for you "Trust but Verify" in that: make sure h/she can demonstrate their results (don't rely on screen shots) do real-time search and if their site is not Ranked on Page 1 of Google, click next and move one.
Search Google "How to get Ranked on Page 1 of Google" or "Local Search Marketing Los Angeles" or "Video Ranker" and you'll what I mean.
Good Luck!!
