About 1930s Clothing Styles

The 1930s was a time where soft and comfortable fabrics were used. The decade saw the future of 1940s fashion, with large shoulder pads beginning to be popular. These are the most popular styles of the era and were worn most often.

Nylon Stockings

Stockings were worn with every type of dress and long or mid length skirt. They were durable enough for every season and gave enough comfort to be worn daily. They were also paired with viscose lingerie lining and bras that formed and shaped the body.

Rayon Dresses

Rayon was an affordable fabric during the time of the Great Depression and was used to make slinky and comfortable evening gowns and day dresses. The most common colors of the time were emerald greens, dark blues, warm reds, and a classic creamy white. The soft fabric lightly hugged against the body without being too controversial.

Opera Gloves and Scarves

Silky opera length gloves were a popular style of gloves that were worn with evening dresses. These gloves completed the look of a strapless sparkly black or white gown and oozed class and elegance. Scarves could be wrapped around the neck with this type of gown or worn with a blouse and long skirt for chilly days.

Pinstripe Suits

A pinstripe suit meant that a man had more worth than another. These suits were high class and were worn with a trench coat and a fedora. The pants were extremely high-waisted and tight fitted at the top, with the blazer having a long v neck drape. Bright suit colors went out of fashion and men opted for the more subtle and subdued look.
