About Aviator Sunglasses

Branded as Ray-Ban, a high-end manufacturer of sunglasses, Aviator sunglasses were developed by Bausch & Lomb. Often having reflective mirror-type lenses, aviator sunglasses cover a larger area than the eye socket. Aviator sunglasses are often made out of a metal frame with characteristic dark smoke-like lenses.

The large design of Aviator sunglasses is an attempt to prevent as much light from entering the eye as possible, from just about any angle. The design of the lenses is somewhat convex (versus flat) which is another feature designed to keep sunlight out. The shape of the lens is the signature tear-drop shape.

Aviator sunglasses were originally designed for the United States military. Later, their popularity grew as pilots and law enforcement officers realized their benefits, as well as their style, while performing their job duties. Beginning in the 1960s, Aviator sunglasses became popular with the younger crowd. Aviator sunglasses are still available to purchase today.

Aviator sunglasses became a signature look for military commanders and celebrities alike. Countless photos have displayed General Douglas MacArthur sporting Aviator sunglasses. Popular musicians, such as Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and Ringo Starr have been noted wearing Aviators. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer sported Aviators in the movie Top Gun and Sylvester Stallone was filmed wearing them in his movie Cobra, both of which came out in 1986.
