Description
Dressmaking is the process of creating, fitting and altering clothes to make brand new pieces. Dressmakers may choose to specialize in one type of clothing, such as wedding gowns, or work on a variety of different pieces. Others may work on accessories such as purses. Dressmakers assist their clients with details such as designs, fabric, and making sure they have the proper measurements. Dressmakers are also skilled in performing alterations and repairs on clothing items, such as hemming, repairing zippers and sewing on buttons.
Education
Most dressmakers have completed high school and earned their diploma. While a college degree is not required to become a dressmaker, some may choose to receive training through a vocational school or community college. Courses in fashion design, sewing techniques and alterations give aspiring dressmakers the tools they need to succeed in their career. Experience is often more important than education, and many employers will provide on the job training to assist the dressmaker in gaining the required skills and experience he needs. Along with excellent sewing skills, a dressmaker should be creative and have an eye for fashion.
Employment
Dressmakers may choose to work from home or run their own business. Others may choose to work at department stores, small shops or dry-cleaning facilities. Job opportunities are greater for those with specialties, as well as those with years of experience.
