Top Things to Know About Dressmaking

Dressmaking is the process of creating, altering and performing repairs on dresses and other articles of clothing.  It requires excellent sewing skills, creativity and attention to detail.  Dressmakers may begin working from their home, creating pieces for family and friends.

Job Description

Dressmakers are responsible for creating, altering and improving dresses and other articles of clothing, to make a wearable piece.  They may also choose to specialize in costume pieces or dance wear.  Dressmakers may choose to work on wedding gowns, formal gowns, suits, jeans, sweaters and dresses.  They may also create clothing patterns and focus on details such as beading, embroidery and smocking.  A dressmaker should possess great sewing and tailoring skills, attention to detail, creativity and an eye for the latest fashion trends.  Dressmakers are not limited to clothing, and may use their skills to create draperies, wall hangings, pillows, bedding and furniture for the home.

Education

While a college degree is not necessary to become a dressmaker, a dressmaker should possess a high school diploma and may choose to attend a trade school or two year college.  Courses in art, design, business, tailoring and sewing will help a dressmaker develop all of the skills necessary for success.  Most employers will look for experience in the field, as well as the ability to create pieces on a consistent basis.

Employment

Dressmakers may choose to work in a garment factory, dressmaking shop, department store or from their own home.  They work with their clients by measuring them, going over patterns, cutting fabric to fit and creating a new piece that their client will love.  They may also do simple repairs, such as sewing on buttons.
