About Electrical Safety Regulations

Electricity has long been the most commonly used type of energy to accomplish a number of tasks, such as lighting and heating workplace facilities. This secondary source of power is relatively safe and efficient, but there are serious consequences for those who fail to follow safety regulations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the primary source of health and safety regulations targeting the workplace and professional environment. OSHA makes electrical safety regulations a very high priority. This is mostly due to the fact that electricity is the most common source of energy used to complete jobs in nearly every industry, and the fact that failing to use electricity safely has led to a large degree of injuries and fatalities.

Priority Regulations

There are a few industries and particular uses of electricity that are given a higher priority in safety regulations than others. This is usually a result of frequent use of the energy source or use in an unstable environment. Some of the most strict regulations apply to the following areas:

  • Construction safety regulation includes a large number of regulations that target the safe use of electricity.

  • Eye and face protection is a major part of safety regulation for industries that involve the risk of direct contact with electricity.

  • Arc explosions are very dangerous results of mismanaging electricity and are heavily regulated.

Electrical Hazards

Failing to recognize and prevent electrical hazards has resulted in thousands of fatalities and an even greater number of serious injuries. Employers are required to be able to locate and minimize electrical hazards as quickly as possible.
