Electrical Safety Lessons
Electricity can harm children as well as adults. Children are never too young to learn the dangers that are involved in electricity. It can lead to electric shock, fires and even death. There are safety lessons that can be taught to the child to help them become aware of the dangers of electricity.
- Babies will try to put anything into the electric socket as they learn to crawl. They should be taught that they should not play with the electric sockets or anything that is plugged into them. Cover the electric sockets with plastic covers that are designed to keep the baby safe.
- As the child gets older they should be taught that they should never plug anything into the outlets without the supervision of an adult. Don't unplug a cord by pulling the cord, unplug it by using the plug.
- Children should be taught never to use electricity around the water and they should not have wets hands when switching lights on or off or when using any electrical appliance. Keep all hair dryers and curling irons away from the water and never use them when they are wet.
- Don't stick any metal objects into a toaster while it is plugged into an electrical socket. Don't put anything metal in a microwave oven. Unplug all appliances when you are not using them.
- If any plug or electrical cord is damaged, don't use it. Electricity can shock you if you are not careful. Worse case, electricity can kill you. Make sure that your child knows how to call 911 for emergency situations.
