About Equipment for Children with Special Needs

Every child regardless of their special needs is entitled to play. They should be in a position to make use of the playground equipment in every playground. Equipment for special needs children is made in such a way that it is able to accommodate the childrens' needs and abilities.  The playground equipment should have surfaces for the children with mobility problems to access them without struggle.

Accessibility and safety

Children with limited mobility should be able to access the equipment with ease. Ramps and ridges should be used in modular play systems, and should be built to be extra-large to accommodate wheelchairs and other movement aids that are used by the children. They also assist in the easy navigation of the children in the playing ground.

Allow socialization

The playground should offer children with an opportunity to interact with other normal children. It is a form of therapy to the children with special needs because it makes the children know that they have been accepted in the society and should not feel any different from any other children. Playing equipment like the merry-go-round should offer places where children with special needs can sit and those who are physically able can stand so that they can ride together.

Interactive

The playground should offer children with an opportunity to learn as they play, especially children with mental disabilities. There should be tables that have toys and other items that children can engage in, giving them an opportunity to explore. Sand tables and water tables should have places that are lower to allow children on wheelchairs to roll up to the table.

Safety and precautions

The playground should be a safe haven for the children. With ramps and railings that have wheel stops. The playground should have caregivers and educators at specific points whose main aim is to assist children with special needs.
