About Fish Diseases and Discoloration

Fish can bring hours of relaxation and are a great hobby. A sickened fish will not show normal behavior in many cases. It is important to observe your fish closely and realize what their normal behaviors are. It is helpful to have a fish guide that can identify specific fish diseases and the proper treatments. Make sure that the treatment will not harm your aquarium's balance. Try to isolate the sick fish elsewhere.

  1. Invest in a general guide to fish and their diseases. The best ones will have pictures and information listed by categories.

  2. Be alert for any unusual circumstances with your fish. A sickened fish will show specific signs and behavioral changes.

  3. Note any loss of appetite or change in size or weight. A disease will cause a fish to show signs that all is not well.

  4. Look for any filmy or slimy coverings on the fish surface. Many fish diseases will make the fish look cloudy or dirty.

  5. Pay attention to any different markings that suddenly show up on the fish. Often these marks and spots will be located on the fins or gills of the fish.

  6. Investigate any fish that is showing signs of not being able to breathe properly. These sickened fish will often float near the top of the aquarium. Action needs to be taken quickly especially if the fish is gasping or breathing abnormally.

  7. Assess any fish that are swimming in an unusual manner. Perhaps they are not swimming straight or are slower in their movements. Some fish will stop swimming and stick close by bits of aquarium coral or decorations. They may seem to rub as if they were scratching their scales.

  8. Check out any fish with rapid color changes. Some species of tropical fish show certain fish diseases by losing their vivid coloration.

  9. Closely observe any fish for signs of deformity to their structure. Some diseases manifest with abnormal eyes, holes or discolored scales.

  10. Treat the fish as indicated making sure to use the proper therapy.
