How to Remove Algae From Fish Bowls

An alga is unwanted waste that grows in fish bowls. Algae makes the water appear hazy and builds up on the actual bowl. Sometimes you cannot completely prevent algae from appearing and have to constantly be cleaning the bowl to keep it under control.

Things You'll Need:

  • Spare Fish Bowl

  • Fish Net

  • Algae Scraper

  • Strainer

  • Decorative Stone

  • Sponge

  1. Fill a spare fish bowl with water. Make sure you don't use water with chlorine. Use the same type of water that’s in the primary bowl.

  2. Move the fish from the primary bowl to the spare bowl with a fish net. Don't try picking the fish up because they could easily fall out of your hands.

  3. Dump the old water out into your sink. Use a strainer if you have decorative stone on the bottom of the bowl so you don't dump them down the sink.

  4. Clean the bowl with an algae scraper and a cleaning sponge. Don't use soap because even a little soap that gets into the water could harm the fish. You might want to even consider replacing the decorative stone if algae is built up on it. Most fish stores should have all the supplies you need.

  5. Fill the primary bowl with water again and dump the decorative stone back in. Make sure you removed all the algae by letting the water sit for several minutes. If you notice it start to haze, you may have to clean the bowl again.

  6. Take the fish out of the replacement bowl and place it back into the primary bowl. Monitor the algae build up and clean when necessary.
