How to Create Golf Apparel

About Golf Apparel Etiquette

Golf is known as a “gentleman’s game,” meaning there is an expected etiquette that should be followed.  This etiquette also applies to clothing worn on the golf course.  Most individual golf courses have their own set of rules when it comes to apparel.  However, there are some widely accepted practices that should be followed no matter what course you are on.

Pants

Most golf courses will not allow men or women to wear denim in the form of jeans.  It is generally required that golfers wear solid-colored khakis or dress shorts.  Women may choose to wear golf skirts.  These are skirts that have a V cut in them to allow for movement, as well as undershorts attached.  No workout clothes, sweatpants or track pants are allowed.  Pants should have belt loops, and a belt should be worn even if it is not needed to hold up the pants.

Shirts

T-shirts and tank tops are not allowed by almost all golf courses.  Shirts are required to have a collar, such as button-down and polo shirts.  Women can have collared shirts as well, but it is not always required.  Shirts are usually short sleeved, but can be long sleeved.  In colder weather, sweaters may be worn over the collared shirt.

Shoes

Golf courses do not allow metal spikes on shoes worn.  This is damaging to the turf on the golf course.  Shoes can have soft spikes made out of rubber or plastic.  Most golfers choose to purchase shoes made specifically for golfing.  Boots, sneakers, flip flops and sandals are not permitted.

Socks

Although there are not as many regulations on socks as other clothing, there is still some etiquette to be followed.  Socks should generally be white or black, but other colors or patterns may be worn if it compliments other clothing.  Socks can be either ankle length or tube style.

Hats

Baseball caps and sun visors are acceptable at most golf courses.  Hats are helpful in keeping the sun out of the golfer’s eyes.  Women may wear hats, as well.  Hats should be sensible and non-offensive.  Cowboy hats are usually not allowed, as well as fedora hats or gag hats.
