How to Compare Internet Connections

About Internet Connections Sharing

Sharing an Internet connection allows multiple computers to use the same service so that they can get online and do whatever they do on the computer. A local area network (LAN) is what allows multiple users to get onto the same connection. This allows them to share documents, printers, and of course, the Internet. Wireless is another option that helps people to share a connection as long as the computer has the capability.

  • Routers: Routers are needed to connect multiple computers to the same LAN line. Being connected to a LAN or a network allows all users to share documents, printers and other computer features that one might need from one computer to another. In order to set up a LAN line, all computers have to be connected to the same router.

  • Wireless Internet: If your current Internet allows for a wireless connection, you can allow everyone in your home to access the Internet with a wired equivalent privacy (WEP) code. This is a 16-digit code that is typed into each computer that has a wireless Internet feature.

  • Considerations: The more users you allow on your Internet connection, the slower your Internet is going to run. If a user is playing a game or downloading music or movies, the connection to other computers is going to be considerably slower than if everyone were just surfing the web or reading.

  • Benefits: One of the best benefits to Internet connection sharing is that you will save money on your service because you don't have multiple dedicated lines to pay for. Administrative work is also cut in half because all the computers have the same access as the rest of the computers do. This means that you can work from any station.
