About Law Enforcement Training in Murder Cases
The methods used to solve homicide cases include a variety of specific techniques. These can range from basic investigative procedures that require little technology to the latest in DNA analysis. Homicide investigators typically receive specialized training in at least one of these techniques.
Preparation
The first step in investigating a homicide is typically to secure the crime scene. This requires the first responders to establish a perimeter to protect evidence before homicide investigators can arrive. A homicide detective will make an initial assessment of the case and may receive training on interviewing witnesses and next-of-kin.
Blood Spatter
Crime scene reconstruction attempts to determine the events surrounding the homicide and the order in which they occurred. The training for blood spatter analysis generally involves recording the size, shape and position of each drop of blood at the crime scene. A scene with a large amount of blood spatter can indicate the location of objects and people at the time of the homicide.
Evidence Collection
The training for evidence collection includes the techniques needed for each type of evidence, especially fibers, body fluids and hairs. It also includes the collection of ordinary objects that may have evidentiary value. Evidence also includes lifting fingerprints and taking impressions of footprints and tire tracks.
Media Relations
Homicide investigators may receive training in media relations. This allows the investigator to make public statements and give interviews to members of the media. The primary goal of media relations for homicide investigators is to avoid compromising the investigation.
