About Non-Friable Asbestos Removal

It is important to remove any materials that contain asbestos from your home.  Asbestos materials can degrade and become damaged over time making them very unsafe.  Non-friable asbestos can be removed without the assistance of licensed professionals as long as it is done with safety in mind.

The Risks of Non-Friable Asbestos

Non-friable asbestos material is any type of building material that contains asbestos but is at a lower risk of contamination.  Contamination risk is low because non-friable asbestos is densely packed or woven, making it hard to break up by hand.  This makes asbestos fibers far less likely to be released into the environment.  A number of building materials can contain non-friable asbestos including floor tiles, roof shingles and insulation for your ceiling.  Be aware of any materials that may contain asbestos when remodeling or finishing your home.

Removal of Materials

Non-friable asbestos should be removed and disposed of carefully.  There is no need to call a licensed professional abatement team as long as the material containing asbestos is not damaged.  It is important that damage does not occur during removal as well.  This may cause asbestos to be released into the environment.  This release can contaminate the area causing health problems for workers and a need for a licensed professional team to clean the area.  Licensed professionals should also be called if you are unsure of the condition of asbestos materials in your home.  All non-friable asbestos materials should be placed in a thick polyethylene bag and transported to a proper facility for disposal after removal.
