About Rotary Hammer Drills

A variety of home improvement projects can be done more efficient with a rotary hammer drill. A regular drill will just spin the drill bit at a rapid pace to cut through walls and other surfaces.  A rotary hammer drill is built to provide a push to the drill bit as it's spinning. This makes it easier for drilling through tough surfaces like brick. A traditional drill needs pushed by the operator for extra cutting force.

Features

Most rotary hammer drills spin at higher revolutions per minute (rpm) than standard drills. Most are also cordless, which allows for a lot more versatility. Rotary hammer drills will probably only be useful for drilling holes up to a half-inch in diameter. You will need a rotary hammer to drill the larger holes.

Bits

A variety of drill bits can be used will a rotary hammer drill. You will need to use different bits when drilling through different types of resistance. For example, using a skinny bit that you would normally use to drill through wood will probably break is you try to use it on something tougher like concrete or brick.

Drill speed

Most drills should have the ability to adjust the drilling speed. It's common to use high speeds for small holes and low speeds for large holes. Some rotary hammer drills will even have a device that measures the length of the hole that is being drilled. These drills should be found in most home improvement stores. Most local experts should be able to demonstrate how to efficiently use these types of drills.
