About Satellite Dish Antennas

When it comes to a satellite dish antenna, most people are referring to the satellite dish itself. When it comes to these antennas, there are three different types used. These are offset satellite antennas, flat antennas and prime focus antennas.

Offset Satellite Antenna

With an offset antenna, the surface of the dish is not round as it is with other antennas. Instead, it is in a symmetric oval. Additionally, instead of being mounted on the center of the dish, it is to the side of the dish. This placement of the antenna is where this type receives its name. One benefit of this type of antenna is that during snowy weather, there is less of a chance for snow to build up on the satellite dish.

Flat Antenna

The flat antenna is the most compact form of satellite antenna. It requires less space than others and tends to be the least obtrusive. One consideration when using this type of antenna is that it is best used with a powerful satellite. This is because in order to have a full signal strength, you must be in a main satellite area.

Prime Focus Antenna

A prime focus antenna, also known as a parabolic antenna, is a satellite dish that is completely round. The focal point of this antenna is in the center of the satellite dish. One benefit of this type of antenna is that it tends to be less sensitive to directional deviations and tends to have a better chance at receiving satellite signals. However, one disadvantage is that it is more likely to have a buildup of snow during snowy weather.
