About Spotify

Spotify is a unique music streaming service that originated in Sweden in 2006 and has finally launched in the United States this past summer. It now boasts almost two million paid subscribers and is optimistic about expanding to 50 million users within a year. Founder, Daniel Elk, has one major long-term goal in mind: to make all the music on the planet available through Spotify.

What Makes it Unique?

Unlike other music streaming services, Spotify allows music listeners to play songs on demand in addition to creating playlists that may be accessed by apps for mobile devices or the desktop. A free version is available which gives you 10 hours of music each month plus the ability to buy songs or playlists that can be downloaded offline for further listening. An added bonus allows sharing of your favorite tunes with friends through Twitter or Facebook.

The Free Version

Free accounts are available only to those who are invited. Once an invitation is extended, the service is absolutely free and offers unlimited streaming for 6 months; however, you must deal with paid ads and there are no downloads or mobile access. Friends may invite you; you can also request an account through various participating company websites or at Spotify directly.

Paid Subscriptions

There are two paid service options in addition to the free service including unlimited desktop for only for $5 per month and premium service, which offers PC plus mobile access with offline music downloads for a fee of $10. Apparently, the less expensive fees in the United States have upset users in Europe; as a result, current rates may be for a limited time only.

Extras

As if all that makes Spotifiy unique were not enough, you have the option of high quality streaming with a rich sound at 320 kbps and a choice of premium gift cards with 1, 3, 6 and 12 month subscription levels to turn on all of your friends to the service as well.
