Advice About Cat Health Problems

Cats are a popular domesticated pet due to their intelligence and friendly nature. They are fairly easy to care for and provide excellent companionship to many. To help ensure the longevity of a cat’s life it is important to be aware of common health problems that cats often experience in order to treat and prevent these problems.

Obesity

This is one of the most common cat health problems due to the low activity level of many indoor house cats. Cats were designed to hunt their prey which required regular exercise in order to eat and survive. The common house cat does not have to do this because its food is provided to it by the owner. In order to prevent a cat from becoming obese, it is important that you do not overfeed the cat. A house cat should eat 3 small meals a day to maintain a healthy weight.

Hair balls

Cats clean themselves and require little-to-no grooming depending on the breed of cat that you own. For this reason a common health problem experienced by cats is the formation of hair balls within the cats' stomach. You can prevent this common health problem by regularly brushing the cat to remove loose hair, as well as administering hair ball medication to help dissolve the hair that is ingested. This medication can be purchased at any pet supply store.

Dental Problems

Dental problems are a common health problem that is experienced by cats that can be easily prevented. Regular teeth cleaning can prevent tooth decay in cats. When you take a cat in for regular veterinary check-ups ask the vet to examine the condition of the cat's teeth and clean them if it is needed.
