All You Need to Know About Health Insurance

Medical expenses have been on a steady rise so more people are looking into obtaining health insurance.  Even though it seems expensive at first, it is a necessity to maintain proper health. There are various plans available and you need to know what will be covered and what the cost it.  With that knowledge, you can decide what plan is best for you.

 Types

There are two types of health insurance plans available, which are reimbursement plans and managed care plans.  Managed care plans include health maintenance organizations (HMO), preferred provider organizations (PPO) and point of service (POS).  With HMO’s, you need to choose a primary care doctor from an HMO network.  The primary care doctor you choose will be responsible for all your heath care including referrals to specialists such as a dermatologist, cardiologist or surgeon.  HMO’s are the cheapest health insurance for both employers as well as employees.  There is no family or individual deductible that needs to be met.  HMO’s cover doctor visits, preventive care and other medical treatment although there may be a co-pay at each visit according to the type of plan you select. PPO plans offer you more flexibility, however are more expensive.

Coverage

You can tell a good health insurance by the items they cover.  They should cover any hospital stays including room rates, surgeons’ fees and other costs related to surgery, doctor visits at office or hospital and laboratory fees including X-Rays.  There are other things that you should consider when choosing a health insurance company as well. If you have massive prescription fees each month, you may want to consider a plan that includes prescription drug coverage.  If you need mental health attention, your health insurance plan will want to include mental health benefits.  Other things to consider on your health insurance plans are maternity care, dental coverage and vision care.

Cost

With health insurance, there is usually a monthly premium fee as well as other out-of-pocket expenses.  These costs can get expensive especially if you have children or adults in your household who require frequent office visits.  Your plan may require a co-payment for doctor or hospital visits.  A deductible may have to be met before the insurance company will start to pay insurance claims.  A deductible is basically a certain amount the insurance company requires you to pay.
