Best Way to Clean a Flooded Carpet
When you have a flooded carpet, you have a very small window in which to act. If you delay, it means that you could have hundreds, if not thousands of dollars worth of damage. Taking a few steps will help you save your carpets, padding and budget.
Items you’ll need:
- Curb key
- Long handled squeegee
- Wet vacuum
- Buckets
- Damp-Rid
- Take whatever steps are necessary to stop the flooding in your home. If the water is coming from your pipes, turn the water supply off at the curb of your home using a curb key. If it is flooding from rain, you will need to wait until the water begins to subside before doing anything.
- Start to remove water once you know that no more will leak into you home. Remove large quantities of water as quickly as you can. Use buckets and literally scoop water up and dump it down a drain or throw it out of the house. Use your squeegee to push large amounts of water out the door, if possible. Eliminating water as quickly as possible is key to saving your flooring.
- Use a wet vacuum once you have made headway with the water. This will help pull water up all the way from the pad. It will be necessary to empty your vacuum every few minutes, so keep an eye on it to ensure that it does not overfill.
- Once the water has been removed, use a moisture removal product such as Damp-Rid to ensure that mold does not grow in the carpeting or on the walls. Damp-Rid will slowly suck the moisture out of the air, claiming any dampness that you may have missed.
