How to Remove Mildew From Fabric

DIY Mildew Removal

Mildew grows on any surface that has moisture with little or no ventilation. Overtime these surfaces can become damaged and if not treated immediately with the proper products. You can choose to buy commercial products, but using home remedies cost less and has no side effects.

Materials

  • Stiff brush

  • Laundry detergent

  • Lemon juice

  • Salt

  • Container

  • Vacuum

  • Cup ammonia

  • Sponge

  • Colorfast fabric bleach

  • Electric fan

Fabric Material Method

  1. Gather all the materials you need to remove the mildew. Most of these items are available at your local grocery store or anyone of the large retailers.

  2. Read your clothing label to make sure that this process would not affect the fiber. Make sure the fabric is not dry cleaning material.

  3. Set your washing machine on the hottest setting, add the laundry detergent and fabric bleach and wash as normal. Take the clothes out of the washer and hang outdoors in direct sunlight.

  4. Take the lemon juice and the salt and add into a container. Make sure to use equal parts of each items and mix together using an old toothbrush to form a paste. Massage the solution onto the affected area and scrub the area gently.

  5. Hang your clothing outdoor with the lemon paste on the fabric, and use the brush to remove the paste. Then, wash your clothing as normal; it should have not any mildew after this step.

Upholstery Method

  1. Take the upholstery material outdoors and brush any noticeable mildew spores, and vacuum. Dispose of the vacuum bag after completion to avoid spreading the mildew.

  2. Mix together a cup of the ammonia and a cup of the water and place in a clean container. Dip the sponge into the solution, and sponge the solution on the affected section until the stains are gone. Immersed a clean rag in fresh water, and wipe the area. Then, dry with clean cloth.

  3. Turn your electric fan on and dry completely.
