How to Prevent Horseback Riding Injuries

Best Ways to Learn Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a great form of exercise, a good way to get some fresh air and a lot of fun. Sometimes, however, the first time on a horse can be scary. Whether or not you want to become a serious equestrian, you should learn how to properly ride a horse. There are several methods of instruction, so you should choose the one that is the best fit for you.

  • Select an older, calmer horse to learn with. A horse described as “bombproof” is great to look for, as this type of horse has most likely been exposed to every type of condition and will not spook easily. Older horses are less spirited, lessening your chances that they will purposefully misbehave and not listen.

  • Do some research online and browse through books on horseback riding. Many resources have very good descriptions about how to sit in the saddle, hold the reins and communicate with your horse.

  • Take private riding lessons. Private lessons provide you with one-on-one help from an instructor who dedicates all their attention to you. Lessons generally last 30 minutes to one hour and are scheduled once a week.

  • If private lessons are too expensive for you, consider group riding lessons. Groups generally have anywhere from three to seven riders, with each rider getting their own horse. Group lessons offer the benefit of riding with other beginners who have the same skill level as you.

  • Attend a horsemanship camp. These programs are commonly intensive two week sessions with instruction and activities lasting from 9 am to 5 pm. Camp groups are separated by age and offered for young children as well as adults.

  • Before you decide to spend a lot of money on horseback lessons or a camp, ask a friend who rides to let you experience being around horses or schedule a short guided ride. Some people realize once they have experienced horseback riding that it isn’t for them.
