How to Dress for Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is a fun and enjoyable hobby for many people. If you are a regular rider, it is important that you have the proper attire for the activity. You can't ride a horse safely in just any outfit. Properly fitting clothing and protective head and footwear are highly recommended to avoid injury.
- Choose a helmet that properly fits and protects your head. Many riders skip this step, but it is highly recommended that you do not. Horseback riding causes more head injuries than motorcycle riding. Therefore, it is important that you always put your helmet on before riding. Purchase a brand new helmet designed for horseback riding, as used ones may not offer the same protection. Ensure the helmet is secure when worn by shaking your head up and down and side to side.
- Put on a snug shirt that is long enough to tuck into your bottoms. Avoid wearing loose fitting clothing as it can get caught in the reins or saddle. If you are just going for a leisurely ride, a t-shirt or sweatshirt is appropriate. Many horseback riders recommend a vest to keep your hands and arms free for movement while also adding warmth to your body on cooler days. If you are attending a horse show, you should contact those in charge to see what they require regarding clothing.
- Select pants that are snug and do not twist or wrinkle while you are wearing them. Some riders prefer riding tights, which are snug bottoms that are stronger than other tights. They often come with leather in the seat and knees for added durability. Infrequent riders tend to wear slim blue jeans when riding. Avoid shorts because the skin on your legs can easily become chaffed if exposed against the horse for an extended period of time.
- Choose footwear that is appropriate for riding. Most go for boots when riding, because they are more durable than other types of shoes. The boots should have a short heel no taller than 1 1/2 inches. They also need low tread, as you don't want them getting caught in the stirrups if you happen to fall.
