Best Ways to Learn How to Park a Car

Before you begin teaching your student driver to drive on the open road, they should be familiar with parking a car. With parking you have several different scenarios to consider, when choosing the best way to teach your student driver. The following are the best ways to learn how to park a car.

  1. General Parking. Have your student driver drive into a large empty parking lot. Place orange cones on each side of a parking place. Tell them to drive the car around the lot and then park between the cones. When the student has learned to easily pull into the parking space without hitting the cones progress to parking around other cars.

  2. Parallel Parking. Place two orange cones against a curb and place two more cones away from the curb. Make sure you space these cones one car length apart. You want them to simulate the approximate size of a parked car. Have your student driver practice parallel parking at this curb between the cones.

  3. Parking on a hill. Within the learning process, tape a post-it to the horn section of the steering wheel. On this post-it write, "Up hill-front wheels out. Down hill-front wheels in. Parking brake on-always." Have your student driver practice parking on a hill using this little cheat sheet.

  4. Parking a vehicle with a manual transmission. Learning to drive vehicle with a manual transmission is tricky. Learning to park this vehicle is just as tricky. Your best option is to take your student driver to a location where there is not any possibility of them rolling into another vehicle. A large open field is your best bet.
