Best Ways to Tell If a Tree is Dead or is Dying

A dead tree in your yard is not only an eye sore, but it also has the potential to cause injury. The most accurate way to determine if your tree is dead or if it is dying is to hire a certified arborist. However, there are tell-tale signs that can provide you with a fair idea of whether or not your tree is in danger or not.

Look at the trees around it. If it's the time of year when there should be an abundance of leaves or fruit and other trees reflect that, this is an indication of a potential problem.

Look closely at the limbs of the tree. Is there any indication of new branches forming? If not, locate a small, thin branch and break it off. Does it snap off easily or does it take some effort? Is it dry inside or moist?

Assess the signs. If the tree is lacking any signs of potential new growth, breaks easily and is dry inside, then there is a good possibility that it is either dead or dying. If it is difficult to break and is moist inside your tree may be salvageable and fertilization or a tree care professional may have the ability to help.
