Coaching Girls Gymnastics Tips
It takes a special person to coach a girls gymnastics team and involves using a variety of different skills. One must be positive and patient, but also have a solid understanding of the sport. Coaches should motivate the girls to work their hardest and provide consistent praise.
Be Confident in your own Skills- Show the students you coach that you have a solid understanding of the skills and techniques you are teaching them. Tell them a little about your background, how long you've been coaching and the accomplishments you've had in the past. When coaching your team, display a positive attitude. Don’t get frustrated if you make a mistake. The girls on your team will pick up on your confidence and begin to exhibit it themselves.
Demonstrate and Set Positive Examples- Not every competition is going to be a win for your team. Always stay positive and be a team player. Understand that your team has worked hard and it is okay if they were defeated. Continue to practice and always shake hands and congratulate the other team. The girls on your gymnastics team will follow your lead and learn to be good sports.
Give Praise on a Daily Basis- An important part of coaching is building positive relationships with those around you. As a coach, you need to provide positive praise during each practice. Find a way to individually offer praise to each girl on the team. Doing so will continue to provide motivation.
Allow for Individual Differences- Each girl on your gymnastics team has different skills and abilities. It is important to recognize these and push each girl to reach their individual goals. Treat the members of your team as individuals, instead of one big group. Don't compare the girls to one another.
