DIY Ideas for Patio Enclosures

Courtyard Patio Ideas

Courtyard patios have four walls that provide privacy so that you can relax and enjoy your garden.  In order to make the most of this area you should think about needs and tastes so that you can thoroughly design the spot before you order the materials.

Ideas for Hardscape Material

Your hardscape is the first material that you should choose.  Your options include:

  • Colored and stamped concrete

  • Pavers- these are interlocking bricks that are made from concrete and available in a variety of colors (i.e. red, tan, gray) and textures.

  • Brick – either concrete or clay.  Sometimes there are various surface colors available.

  • Flagstone (a type of natural stone)

Fireplaces and Fire Pits

Consider whether you want to have either a fireplace or a fire pit.  These are available in a variety of materials (i.e. stucco, rock, clay, metal).  This can serve as your courtyard’s focal point.

Fountains

Consider adding a freestanding or a wall-mounted fountain (think of a way in which to hide the wiring where it connects to your home’s walls).   You may also want to consider purchasing a solar-powered fountain.

Plants

You will definitely want to include some plants in your courtyard patio.  Some ways in which you can do so include:

  • Plant greenery within the spaces in your hardscape

  • Set out containers of plants (both flowers and trees can be planted therein)

Shade

Ensure that there is enough sun and warmth for your plants but that there is also enough shade for maximum lounging comfort.  You may wish to install a wooden pergola or an awnings that is made out of sun-resistant material.
