Garden Design Basics

Creative Garden Design

Do you dream of turning your garden into a personal oasis?  Many home gardeners and landscapers do, as evidenced by the many television home improvement shows and magazine articles that highlight countless creative garden design ideas. A stunning garden refuge is certainly possible with some good planning, inspiration and ingenuity.

  1. Water fountains have shown to be very popular garden additions.  The tranquil sound of trickling water in a nature setting is a simple way to add a pleasing ambience to a garden. Koi ponds and other water treatments are other ways to bring in a water element.

  2. For the truly ambitious, topiaries trimmed into spheres, spirals or most any shapes desired, are elegant additions.  Topiaries can be formed using in-ground bushes or with plants (such as rosemary or English ivy) that are growing in appropriate-sized pots or planters.

  3. Adding lighting to a garden design can add subtle or dramatic effects. Solar lights placed around a pathway, landscape spotlights shined upward onto trees, and hanging strings of outdoor origami lanterns, are a few attractive options.

  4. Rocks used in landscape are not only decorative but also functional.  Building a fire pit, or unique seating from large rocks, are low-maintenance garden projects that add special interest.

  5. Garden gazebos provide extra seating and shelter.  Hanging blooming plants and wind chimes around the gazebo perimeter bestows extra charm.

  6. By implementing sound system speakers into the garden design plan, perhaps using outdoor speakers that are manufactured to look like rocks, any outdoor space can be a place to enjoy music while spending time outdoors in your new garden haven.
