How to Get Started as a Freelance Graphic Designer

Freelance graphic designers create logos and images for businesses online in order to promote their products and services. Many freelance graphic designers choose to work as independent contractors giving them the freedom to choose their clientele and work whenever they want.

  1. Complete your high school education and attend a community college or university that offers classes on graphic design. Learn from a qualified instructor on how to design images to place on Web pages. Instructors provide lectures and hands-on training on designing images for Web pages.

  2. Learn how to use as many graphic design programs as you can. Search online for other graphic design programs. The instructor may teach you by using PhotoShop; however, learning how to use many different graphic design programs allows you to become more marketable when you seek freelancing positions.

  3. Discuss freelancing opportunities with your career advisor or instructor. He may have some connections with businesses in the area. Volunteer for a nonprofit organization. This allows you to obtain work experience, so that you can apply for paid positions later on. It also allows word of mouth advertising for your future freelancing business; if people like your work, the organization can recommend you for other projects.

  4. Design a Web page that shows some of your work. Purchase a domain name and Web hosting for your page, so that potential clients can see your work. The domain name should consist of two to five keywords (called longtail keywords) that usually end in a .com or .net. Purchasing Web hosting in addition with a domain name allows more potential clients to view your page on the Internet.
