DIY Gothic Fashion

Gothic fashion is characterized by its brooding nature.  However, like all styles in fashion, there are a wide variety of takes on this style. Yet, all varieties of this style share a few common traits. In order to pull off this look, a few key guidelines must be followed.

Color Scheme

Gothic fashion is characterized by the use of dark colors. The most common color in gothic fashion is black. However, colors do not have to be black. In fact, dark blues and purples are also popular colors. The key is to use dark colors without highlights. This will provide a unified color scheme for the base of your outfit.

Complexion

Another attribute of a gothic style is the avoidance of overly tanned skin. A tan complexion and a majority of dark colors in the wardrobe would create a clashing appearance. However, the actual skin tone does not have to be completely pale. Creating these skin tones will require avoiding long exposure to sunlight. Otherwise, the skin will tan too much and start clashing with the gothic color scheme.

Makeup

Color choice with makeup can be tricky. However, the key is to balance the need for dark colors with the natural tones in your skin. For some people, dark colored makeup will highlight the best features of their skin. Yet, these colors will not be complimentary for others. A common rule for finding this balance is to go as dark as you can with your makeup colors, but do not go more than a few shades darker than your hair.
