DIY Sewer and Drain Cleaning

Is the water in your home or office draining slowly from sinks, tubs or toilets? If so it’s time to clean the sewer and drain in your building. Instead of calling a drain cleaner out to your home or office you can save yourself hundreds of dollars by cleaning your drains yourself. Learn the proper techniques and methods to clean your drains efficiently.

  • Pour a pot of boiling water down your sinks and drains at least once per week because boiling water is the easy way to break up any grease, sludge or hair that has accumulated in your pipes.

  • Mix a half of cup of white vinegar and baking soda into a cup. Pour the mixture down the slow moving drain and allow the mixture to sit for three minutes. Rinse the mixture away by pouring boiling water down the drain. This DIY method should not be used if the drains have been cleaned professionally in recent months because the vinegar can react with drain cleaning chemicals that have been used in this past.

  • Pour a half-cup of salt plus baking soda into the drain and then follow with six cups of boiling water. Any drains that this mixture has been poured into should be allowed to sit overnight then when morning comes these drains should be flushed with cold water for five minutes. The abrasive nature of this mixture will more effectively remove stubborn clogs and get the pipes in a home or office flowing freely again.

  • Remove any tree roots blocking the sewer line. The best way to get rid of roots is to pour copper sulfate down your sewer line because it’s the main ingredient found in most root killing products. Copper sulfate is hazardous and should only be used when following specific instructions.

Once your drains are flowing normally once again it’s important to add drain cleaning to your to do list so that it gets done every three months. This will insure that your drains will continue to work at their full capacity and save you the time and money of calling a high paid drain cleaning specialist to your home or office.
