DIY Storage Systems for Batteries
Organizing batteries makes it easier to find the right quantity and size for quick replacements in remote controls and toys. Proper battery storage systems also keep these expensive items from getting misplaced. Improper storage can lead to battery damage and leaks, which can be dangerous for the entire family. To keep your batteries in control, you can create your own DIY storage system.
Choose a Battery Hub Location
This is the location where all batteries will be stored. It can be a shelf in the utility room, a drawer in the kitchen or any other easy-to-access location. You should avoid locating the battery hub near food products or in any place reachable by small children.
Storing Batteries in Drawers
If the battery hub will be located in a drawer, you need a way to seperate types of batteries. Simply throwing every battery in the house into the drawer will do little to make them more accessible. For wide, flat drawers, you could turn a silverware sorter into a battery organizer. Place different sized batteries in each slot and use one slot to hold batteries that may or may not be out of juice. That way, you can test those batteries before throwing them away.
For deeper or odd sized drawers, you can purchase nesting baskets at an office supply or dollar store. Label baskets with batteries sizes and stack them with the most used battery types on top. Most of the time, that will be double- and triple-A.
Storing Batteries on Shelves
You could use the same type of baskets to store batteries on shelves. However, open containers leave plenty of room for dust and air. Dust inside the baskets can increase allergens and batteries stored in the open are more likely to corrode. Replace baskets with plastic containers. You can also store batteries in a small tackle box, making it easy to move them around the home.
