DIY Tecumseh Lawn Mower Repair
Understanding a Tecumseh lawn mower requires a basic knowledge of small engines, some tools and time. Always remember to disconnect the spark plug before repairing or maintaining a lawn mower engine. This will prevent accidental engine starts and accidental injuries. The basic components of a small engine is the fuel system, air system, starter and the cutting system.
Cutting system
The cutting system consists of a steel blade, which dulls over time. When the grass is being crushed and broken instead of being cut, it's time to sharpen the blade. Just like any steel blade, a sharpening stone, a sharpening circular attachment for a power drill or a metal file will restore the sharp edge.
The drive shaft belt is a part of the cutting mechanism. Check for wear, stretching and cracking. If you have a larger lawn mower, this wear and break like the timing belt in your car. Wear gloves to prevent your fingers being caught between the drive shaft and the belt as it slides into the groove.
Fuel and air systems
A clogged fuel and air intake can choke a motor and prevent starting. Tecumseh places the air intake on the side of the motor in a plastic housing. Remove the foam sponge and wash it thoroughly with Dawn and water to remove all grease and dirt. Allow it to dry completely.
The fuel assembly is located on the back or side of the lawn mower depending on the model. Drain the fuel tank into a gas can before cleaning the screen and fuel line. Check the hose and screen for obstruction, dirt and clogging.
Starter
The Tecumseh starts with a starter or rip cord which creates electrical current to the spark plug, which in turn starts the motor. Once the motor starts, it maintains the current. Remove the cord cover to make sure it is secure to the engine. A loose screw is enough to render a starter cord useless. Check the wires which connect the engine to the starter unit. If the starter component is broken, it may be less expensive to just replace it with a new one unless you are adept at small engine repair.
