Debates About How Kids Uniforms Would Save Money
There are many debates surrounding the subject of kids’ uniforms. One of these debates focuses on how the required use of kids’ uniforms helps to save money. No matter which side of this debate you are on, there is much to be learned from both sides.
For Parents
Some proponents claim that school uniforms can save parents money when it comes to buying school clothing. This is for two reasons:
- Children will not demand expensive clothing to look good and impress their peers.
- Children will require less clothing items altogether. No one will know that they are wearing the same slacks on Friday that they wore on Monday and Wednesday.
The argument to these points usually counters the first: Children will still expect to buy higher-priced uniform items from name-brand stores. They won’t want to settle for Wal-Mart uniform items; they will want Gap uniform items.
For Schools
The main money-saving benefit claimed by proponents for schools is that it will save money on security costs. This is also for two reasons:
- Children will be less likely to harm each other for wearing the wrong colors or because they want to steal a clothing item from another student.
- It will be easier to spot kids who don’t go to the school, enabling schools to kick them out before they create security risks.
The argument against these points again usually counters the first: Children will still find a reason to be violent towards one another, requiring the school to keep their security costs up.
Kids can still wear bandanas and other items that show their allegiance to a particular gang. Since shoes or coats are not regulated, a student may be harmed by another student in an attempt to steal these items.
