Decorating Ideas Using Black Leather Furniture

Leather furniture resists stains and damage and wipes clean easily with a damp cloth, making it a popular choice for home furnishing. The classic look of black leather requires careful decorating so it doesn't make a room appear dark or dated. Simple décor ideas can make the room look its best whether you have an entire leather living room set or a single accent piece.

Minimal Design

Black leather furniture can make a room look heavy, especially if you use larger pieces. Lighten other items in the room to offset the heaviness. Use a soft rug in a solid color or understated design. Hang simple window covers, such as shear panels or wood blinds in a neutral color. Use artwork sparingly and stick to simple frames and art. The focus of the room in a minimal design is the furniture and all other elements should only provide a light backdrop.

Add Color

Use color to complement the black leather without overwhelming the room. Choose one or two colors to serve as accents. Use these colors for throw pillows, artwork, rugs and drapes. Light walls help both the furniture and accent colors pop. The accents provide a focal point that prevents the black furniture from overwhelming the décor.

A Traditional Look

Create the appearance of a traditional study or lounge by taking advantage of the solid appearance of black leather. Cover the floor with a Persian rug and place a heavy wood coffee table in the middle. Bring the furniture in around the perimeter of the table to create a natural conversation area. Choose a traditional focal point, such as a fireplace or bookshelf, for the room. Keep the walls a light color so the room doesn't feel too dark or stuffy. If you choose wood paneled walls, consider installing the paneling only beneath a chair rail and keeping a lighter color above.
