How to Find Portrait Photographers

Degree Requirements for Portrait Photographers

Portrait photographers make memories last for a lifetime. They understand how to capture a child's smile or new bride's happiness on her wedding day. Photographers often have natural artistic abilities but can perfect their skills through formal training. Some obtain their diplomas through school, while others opt for degrees in portrait photography.

Associate's Degrees

Some programs offer associate's degrees in photography. Portrait photography is typically offered as a core course in these programs. Students may also earn a certificate in photography degree through schools like Santa Ana College. This college provides three units of study for this type of photography.

Bachelor's Degrees

Students can strive for their Bachelor of Science in Photography degrees through accredited colleges or universities. These degree programs teach students how to use the correct lighting techniques, develop film and many other critical tasks pertaining to portrait photography. Some schools, like The Art Institute of Pittsburg, offer online bachelor's degree programs. Photography students can learn their skills in the comfort of home rather than a traditional school classroom.

Curriculum

The curriculum set-up varies with each photography school program but main core classes often remain the same. Students can expect to learn courses such as:

  • The fundamentals of design

  • Color and visual design

  • Multimedia

  • Business and marketing

Employment Opportunities

After completing their education, graduates may find work in group portrait studios. They can also work as self-employed individuals in their own studios. They set their own hours, prices and services. However, it may take awhile before a self-employed photographer builds a good client base and reputation.
