How to Prevent Shadows in Portrait Photography
Whether you are a professional or recreational photographer, there is no doubt that you want your photographs to come out perfect. Shadows are a common problem for many photographers, especially in portrait photography. There are some easy-to-do tips and techniques to prevent shadows.
- Bring the subject away from any walls. Do not use a wall as a backdrop. If you must use a wall, move the subject as far away from the wall as the portrait will allow. Walls will automatically catch and display any shadows that are cast.
- Bounce light off the ceiling to illuminate the background. Point a light source directly at the subject, then raise the head until it is pointing at the ceiling. This will light up any shadows being cast. It may be necessary to use a twin light setup. For this setup, use one light stand as you would normally. Place a second light stand next to the subject and point it directly at the wall.
- Soften lighting by bouncing it off an umbrella or reflector made specifically for this purpose. These can be found online or at photography supply stores and are inexpensive. Aiming the light source at the reflector will soften harsh lighting. This also reduces or eliminates the casting of shadows.
- Use the flash settings on your camera when taking portrait photos outside, even in bright sunlight. The flash will even out the lighting, reducing the chance of seeing the shadow. Turn off the flash when taking portraits indoors to eliminate shadows. Without a light source pointing directly at the subject, there is nothing to cause shadows.
- Replace harsh lighting sources with softer, ambient lighting. Lamps and low-wattage bulbs work well for this. Fluorescent bulbs bring brightness without harshness. Another option is to use candles; however, this is less popular because of its lack of brightness.
- Place a single-layer tissue over the flash. This will diffuse the light just enough that it does not cause shadows. Make sure the tissue is not impeding the lens.
- Use a black backdrop instead of white or other lighter colors. Shadows will not be seen against a black backdrop or a wall painted black.
