How to Pose for Portrait Photography

Some individuals may be uncomfortable posing for portrait photography. These people may feel like they have to force a smile or a grin, which ends up looking unnatural. However, this problem can be fixed if a person knows how to pose for a photograph.

  1. Choose a photographer to take your portrait photograph. Select a colorful background and nice scenery to bring out your best features.

  2. Stay relaxed while having your photo taken. Avoid being tense, which will cause an unnatural facial expression and body placement. Breathe slowly so that the photographer can capture your essence on the camera.

  3. Sit up straight in a chair and avoid slouching. Good posture will give you a thinner and taller appearance.

  4. Choose a spot to gaze at that is slightly away from the camera. Avoid looking straight into the camera, as that may look like you are staring.

  5. Consider the facial expression that you want captured. Think of something that amuses you so that you smile naturally for the photographer. Remembering something that makes you happy will help you avoid faking a smile, which is not flattering.

  6. Position your body in a flattering way for the camera. Place your hands on your lap and make sure that they are set firmly in place. Put one foot behind the other and have them face the direction of the camera.

  7. Take a look at the picture of yourself that the photographer took. Let the professional know if it captures what you want. Bring up any suggestions you have before it gets developed.
