How to Boost Newspaper Advertising Sales

Different Types of Newspaper Advertising Jobs

Keeping the financial end of a newspaper running is the responsibility of the sales or advertising department. There are many different types of newspaper advertising jobs available starting with the classified ad sales rep and working upwards to business sales and major accounts.

Advertising is the heart of any newspaper business. While many may think it's the reporters who keep that copy coming, a newspaper would not exist without its sales staff. There are many different types of newspaper advertising jobs that you might want to consider if you have a hankering to join the sales field. The basic sales job for a newspaper consists of the telephone sales rep that takes calls for the papers and sells personal ads. These may seem like customer service jobs, but they're sales in that they are encouraging the ad placer to put more words, buy bold type or add color to the piece.

More advanced sales jobs exist where the sales rep goes door-to-door selling ad space to new businesses, former advertisers or smaller display ads. This job takes a tough skin and a winning personality. Additionally, it helps if you can paint word pictures that help your customer see the value of investing their money with your paper. Other positions in the newspaper advertising field include major account representatives. These are seasoned pros that wine and dine the big dollar accounts and assure that they will continue their advertising ways. Naturally, there is also a line of sales management and support staff that work in the office too.
